What is Genre?

We divide our movies, TV, art and literature by genre, or type.

a particular style used in cinema, writing, or art, which can be recognized by certain features
The novel did not really exist as a genre before the 17th century.
There’s a whole genre of films about city-dwellers lost in the wilderness.

a class or category of artistic endeavour having a particular form,content, technique, or the like: the genre of epic poetry; the genre of symphonic music.


Some genre conventions are very strong. Certain techniques or stylistic devices clearly indicate to the viewer / reader that they should feel particular emotions such as fear or happiness. Artists use these conventions to their advantage.
